Back It Up Baby!
How to back up your Wordpress blog so you can recover it if things go ‘pear shaped‘. Don’t get scared now!
If there’s ONE thing I’ve learned over the years it’s to back up, back up, BACK UP!….. in the video below I’ll be talking about using a Wordpress plugin to set the backing up of your database on an automatic scheduled timetable with backups sent to your email address ( daily, weekly or twice a day!)
Get into the habit of backing up, properly, today!
You know it makes sense!
Plus I explain why that, in itself, is not enough. What about all your images and your uniquely tweaked theme? Hmmm, maybe a weekly backup of those files using Filezilla is in order!
Every time you post new content think, “How would I feel if I had to write this from scratch?” and that will determine how often you backup your database!
OR think:
“How would I feel if I lost not only my posts but my whole site!”
I don’t mean to scare you but as Benjamin Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”
Glossary of terms used in this tutorial:
- MySQL Database – This is what sits behind your Wordpress blog and where all your posts, pages, comments etc. are stored. (Analogy Alert!)Your Wordpress blog theme, as you see it on the web, is like a magazine or book. Your database is what fills all those magazine pages with the relevant textual content. Otherwise it’s just a pretty cover and a load of blank pages!

Re backing up your ‘Uploads’ folder remember that the second/third time you do this you need only backup that current months folder of images as previous months and years you will have already saved and, unless you’ve done some editing, they won’t have changed since last time.
